What is a Green Card Lottery (lotto)?

green card lottery website translation

The Diversity Immigrant Visa program (Green Card Lottery) was formed to be able to document immigrants in the country and after being able to prove themselves as good citizens, offer them full citizenship.   This visa is also known as a ‘green card‘ and every year there is a lottery (lotto) which draws visa applicants names and if they are selected are offered residency. The USA is a country where millions of people from all over the world would like to have a chance to visit or better yet become permanent resident citizens. When things such as illegal immigration and people entering and living in the country illegally started to become a problem, the federal government came up with a solution. Every year the US Government issues 50,000 visas through the Green Card lottery and there are certain stipulations.

No country can receive more than 7 percent of the total visas. Applicants must have graduated from high school and they must also have two years of work experience or training in a job that they wish to pursue once they are in the United States. Statistics show that about 80 percent of the visas are issued to counties from Africa and Asia. Most well developed nations are not eligible for the USA Green Card Lottery.
